Screen overlay scams take over your computer or mobile device in an effort to convince the user to call a number that leads to the swindler waiting to obtain the caller’s personal and financial information.  As these types of scams increase, the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation compiled a variety of tips to assist consumers who may be presented with screen overlay malware.


What is a screen overlay scam?

Screen overlay scams are scams where your computer receives popups appearing to come from the operating system of your device.  These popups warn of issues with that can be resolved by calling a certain phone number. After contacting the phone number, the consumer is given prompts from a “customer service representative” to input specific details, including bank account information to bypass the device takeover.

How can I avoid the screen overlay scams?

Sensible rule to follow:

Rule of thumb... Only respond to screens from persons or businesses you know, NEVER respond to the fake screens as they can install Trojans, Spyware, Malware and even Phishing your profile..
